50 years ago, Jean Leon, a cantabro born in 1928 and baptized with the name of Ceferino Carrion, was already the owner of a famous restaurant in Beverly Hills attended by the great Hollywood stars of the time such as Marilyn Monroe, Paul Newman or Robert Wagner. With the opening of the restaurant La Scala in 1956 he had fulfilled his American dream but continued having another great yearning: to make a wine with his name that was at the height of his select clientele. So Jean Leon decided to make his second great dream come true and found in Cataluna, in the heart of Penedes, the right place to carry it out.
In 1963, I bought 150 hectares and replaced the autochthonous strains with French varieties, then unknown in the region.Jaume Rovira, the winemaker, made the elaboration of elegant wines with personality. The bottles that went on the market were from the 1969 harvest. Here begins the story of Jean Leon Vinya La Scala Gran Reserva. And 50 years have passed since it was the first wine made mostly with cabernet sauvignon in Spain, considered today the great legacy of this visionary sonar.
Vinya La Scala is born from a small plot of eight hectares of almost sexagenarian strains, located at an altitude of 295 meters in the heart of Penedes.Very limited production, only those years in which the harvest has been exceptional and is one of the few Catalan wines qualified as' Vi de Finca&rsquo ;, the highest distinction granted by the Generalitat de Catalunya.Salto fame in 1981 when Ronald Reagan chose him for the official dinner of investiture as president of the United States. It was the harvest of 1975.From 1994, Vinya La Scala established a connection with the art world that is still alive today, embodying the works of recon hidden artists.
Historical tasting by Mireia Torres
Mireia Torres, current director of the Jean Leon winery, describes in Enofusion the story of Jean Leon Vinya La Scala Gran Reserva with a vertical tasting of seven exceptional walks, seven harvests that allow us to understand the history of this great wine with an extraordinary capacity of guard: 1975, 1982, 1989, 1994, 1998, 2000 and 2012.The latter is the one that is currently in the market and that is illustrated by the Barcelona artist Josep Moscardo, evoking the time when Jean Leon and his family moved to live in Barcelona, several years before he decided to embark clandestinely towards the United States and embark on his American dream.Vinya La Scala is , in short, a wine with a great personality and elegance, which has remained faithful to its creator keeping his legacy alive.
